Fashion model Rosemary Vandenbroucke has joined the growing group of showbiz personalities involved in drugs scandals.

Police in the US state of Nevada have charged her with possession of drugs and a hit-and-run traffic offence.

The 28-year-old French-Chinese model, a well-known face on the Hong Kong fashion scene, was arrested for possessing a small amount of Ecstasy after an officer questioned her about a substance she was seen passing to another person at the Burning Man counterculture festival in the Black Rock desert, Sheriff Ron Skinner said.

Vandenbroucke, who began her modelling career at the age of 14 after winning the second Elite Model Look contest, was charged with possession of a controlled substance, and released on US$15,000 bail pending an October 19 court appearance.

A conviction could result in up to four years' probation.

Arrest records show Vandenbroucke produced a French passport and provided a Hong Kong address. Records do not say whether she was represented by a lawyer. It is not clear if she is still in the United States.

Skinner said the arrest was one of about 30 made during the annual event, which officials say drew more than 50,000 people to the desert about 180 kilometres north of the city of Reno.

The model also faces three charges for allegedly crashing a 12-metre rented motor home into downtown Reno's "Biggest Little City in the World" arch at about 3pm on Monday, police Sergeant Jim Stegmaier said.

Vandenbroucke was arrested on charges of vehicular hit-and-run, failure to maintain insurance and for making an improper right turn.

She was photographed and fingerprinted in jail in Reno and released on US$1,280 bail, sheriff's Deputy Armando Avina said. She is due in court by September 29.

Vandenbroucke, who grew up in France, is known for a colourful love life and for being a frequent partygoer.

She is one of the best-known faces in Hong Kong's fashion scene. She tried to launch a pop career, making a solo debut in 2006. Her last public appearance in the city was a perfume launch on August 25.

She is the latest Hong Kong celebrity to hit the headlines for involvement with drugs.
